Gropius designed various sections of the building differently, separating them consistently according to the function.
After leaving Weimar and moving the school to Dessau, Gropius designed a new Bauhaus school building in 1925-26.
After leaving Weimar and moving the school to Dessau, Gropius designed a new Bauhaus school building in 1925-26.
Gropius designed this building with the idea that he had previously realised with the construction of the Fagus Factory.
In both, Fagus Factory and Bauhaus Dessau, a glass facade on the load-bearing framework creates an impression
of transparency and gives
the lightness to the facade
The main elements of the complex are the glass-fronted, three-storey workshop wing, the likewise three-storey building for the vocational school and the five-storey studio building.

Unlike the other buildings, this flat-roof, three-story building features a façade that is comprised of more glass than brick.

Another innovative feature of the building is the fully glazed exterior corners, which are free of structural elements.

A large solid block houses the main entrance. The solidity of this volume contrasts with the lightness of the facade.

the Gropius House
1938

The Gropius House was the residence of Walter Gropius and his family during his occupation at Harvard University.

The house is a hybrid of traditional New England aesthetic and
the modernist teachings of
the Bauhaus.

Large windows frame the landscape, expand the interior spaces, and are positioned for maximum light and heat.
“As to my practice, when I built my first house in the U.S.A. - which was my own - I made it a point to absorb into my own conception those features of the New England architectural tradition that I found still alive and adequate. This fusion of the regional spirit with a contemporary approach to design produced a house that I would never have built in Europe with its entirely different climatic, technical and psychological background.”
